I met the Chilean poet Raúl Zurita in London through his translator, the poet & scholar William Rowe. A small piece of speculative filming led to our being given a grant by the University of Diego Portales towards the making of a full-length documentary. On the strength of this William & I spent three weeks in Chile, where I shot this film, which is in Spanish & provisionally titled Escribir en el desierto, examining Zurita’s response, most notably in his Canto a su amor desparecidos, to the military dictatorship & its aftermath.
Post-production work is well under way, though to complete it I need to raise further funding. This clip is a ten-minute trailer for the film.
